An exceptional result in terms of agility, smoothness of operation, consumption figures and emissions has been achieved by the Mercedes-Benz engineers with the new-concept 4-cylinder diesel powerplant which is being deployed for the first time in the S-Class.

The new powerplant delivers an impressive maximum torque of 500 Nm. At the same time the diesel engine is sparing on fuel consumption, low on emissions, quiet and - at 150 kW - particularly powerful for its displacement class. This is made possible through a package of cutting-edge technologies. The latest-generation common-rail diesel technology impresses with its injection pressures of up to 2000 bar, optimised combustion chambers and high-precision piezo injectors. The high ignition pressure and two-stage charging are the reasons behind the powerful torque throughout the engine speed range. And two Lanchester balancer shafts help to provide the required smoothness of operation. The ECO start/stop function takes care of switching off the engine temporarily when the vehicle comes to a stop.

The new S 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY is also available in a long-wheelbase version.

Equipped with state-of-the-art common-rail direct injection and a series of other innovations, including piezo injectors, the S 350 BlueTEC sets new standards in diesel technology. The maximum torque rating of 620 Nm is available from a mere 1600 rpm. The assembly operates cleanly and efficiently and generates an output of 190 kW.

Six cylinders and a balance shaft ensure exceptionally smooth operation. Lightweight design, coupled with improved aerodynamics and the use of tyres with optimum rolling resistance, has a positive effect on (combined) fuel consumption, which averages just 6.8-6.9 litres per 100 km (combined).

The clean diesel engine based on BlueTEC catalytic converter technology uses the reactant AdBlue® to purify exhaust gases. What remains is essentially water, nitrogen and carbon dioxide (CO2) – the final products of complete combustion. The models already comply with the requirements of the Euro 6 emission class (enters into force in 2014) and can reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by up to 90%.

For enhanced road-holding on snow, ice, in rain and on poor road surfaces, the S 350 BlueTEC is also available with 4MATIC all-wheel drive.
